IOT Device Challenge [2019]

 Design  & Fabrication

  • Brainstormed ideas to complete the competition's goal of designing "an IOT device which could be added to iRobot's current product line-up 

    • Decided as a team to set out to create an app based, remote controlled, smart trash can which could detect if it was full, navigate itself to the curb for pickup, and provide the user with environmental tips based on garbage quantities  ​

  • Worked alongside two other mechanical engineers to design a chassis, built around the parts from the back end of iRobot's new Lawn Mower, Terra, which could support and move a standard size garbage barrel 

  • Utilized Creo Parametric to design  Mounting features for the base which were then printed using Nylon Jet Fusing 3D printing to create robust yet, affordable parts

  • With the help of two EE interns, an Arduino+ Raspberry Pi control system was mounted to the chassis and connected to the wheel-gear box assemblies 

 Cloud Based App Development 

  • Worked alongside a software engineering to help enable the platform and get it connected, via a web based service called FireBase, to the cloud

  • Ran through a series of tests and calibration measures to ensure the mechanical systems worked with the software controls as intended 

Demo / Outcome

  • Successfully met the goals we outlines in our project road map 

  • Presented our project (demo + presentation) to multidisciplinary panel of  engineers

  • Placed 1st of 10 teams by creating a feasible, cost affordable, functional and practical system all geared towards helping iRobot continue with its mission of"empowering people to do more"
